The 7th Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) was held on September 3rd to 4th 2018 in Beijing. The theme of the summit was “China and Africa: Toward an Even Stronger Community with a Shared Future through Win-Win Cooperation”. Chinese National Development and Reform Commission declared on September 7th that until now there have been 37 countries and African Union signed a memorandum of understanding of “One Belt and One Road”. Signatory country reached 70% of these countries attended the summit and South Africa became China’s biggest trading partner for the last eight years. Since the establishment of diplomatic relationships on January 1st, 1998, China and South Africa’s bilateral trade relations has been increasing rapidly. As “One Belt and One Road” policy covers South Africa, the cooperation between China and South Africa has been an important part of this strategy.
South Africa is the middle-income developing country as well as the most economically developed country in Africa. In December 2010, China negotiated with Russia, India and Brazil and decided to absorb South Africa as a member of BRICS. As the No. 14th of most carbon emission countries in the world and under increasing pressure of emission reduction and global warming, South Africa government strives to develop clean and renewable energy sources.
South Africa government recently declared a decision of promoting electric vehicle manufacturing and using. It says that South Africa will not fall behind in green economy and environmental protection technology. The government plans to sharply increase electric vehicle charging piles and implement “Electric Automobile Industry Development Roadmap”.
